Die Hard Vilmanians Magazine

Die Hard Vilmanians Magazine is an entertainment comics magazine published by ACR Publications. Its maiden issue came out in 1971 with Angel C. Reyes as Managing Editor and Phil. Ver. Posadas as Editor. The title of the magazine was named after Vilma Santos’ die hard fans or followers. – Komiklopedia (READ MORE).

“…True enough, they were most enthusiastic but kind of controlled with their adulation when Ate Vi came with her Girl Friday Aida Fandialan in tow. Anyway, when the famed actress had the chance to talk with her adoring fans, she was most nostalgic as she went down memory lane of her memorable encounters with them. According to her, she had this fan who would come almost on a daily basis at her governor’s office in Batangas and never complained even if Ate Vi could not attend to her or keep her entertained. The actress-politician also cited this aging fan who’d carry blown-up photos of the Star for All Season with all the dedication in the world during her VIP days, content to see her idol perform. She also expressed being truly touched by the filial devotion of this fan who was with her almost from the very beginning of her illustrious showbiz career and was just staying with her family in a modest rented apartment in La Loma. The mere fact that he got along famously with her late dad was something that Ate Vi would always remember with fondness. “And I’m glad that he’s still with me today!” she says apparently overwhelmed by a myriad of emotions. Ate Vi also remembered a fan who was already in her early 80s and yet she never failed to come whenever she asked her to. At this point, Ate Vi also singled out a fan who has remained unattached and never gotten married, but has religiously brought her kakanins from Biñan, Laguna. Indeed, the Star for All Seasons is obviously equipped with an elephantine memory who never forgets any good deed done or kindness she’s been most generously showered with…” – Peter Ledesma (READ MORE)

Becoming Gloria Romero “Vilma Santos’ loyal fans were so happy about her latest acting award at the Urian awards (for her performance in “Dekada ’70”) that they turned out in full force at her “reunion” celebration at Bakahan at Manukan on P Guevarra st. in San Juan. Movie scribes with a soft spot in their hearts for Vi also showed up, making the evening a riotous success. In the midst fo all the fun and frolic, Vilma was able to sit with us for a spell, and breathlessly brought us up to date on what’s been happening to her these past months, as well as gave us a peek into her future prospects. First off, she’s appreciative of the trophies that she’s gotten for her intense but controlled performance in “Dekada ’70,” for which she swept the competition…In the past, she used to think of retiring from the big and small screens, to concentrate on public service and urban management. Now, however, she’s sure that she’ll continue to act “until I become a gransmother – Gloria Romero.” This is a welcome development on the local film scene, which is notorious for its fetish for youth, and its bias against age and experience. With Gloria and now Vilma showing the way, our moviegoers can be educated to value veteran talents over callow starlets, so performances on the big screen can mature and deepenn through time. The future? Vilma wants to make one film a yar, and is looking for challenging plots and characters. In politics, Vilma debunks rumors that she’s going to run for senator next year. In fact, she refuses to think of politics at all, preferring instead to concentrate on her work as mayor of Lipa City. But, if voters there want her to run for another term, Our sense is that they won’t have a hard time persuading her…” – Nestor U. Torre, Philippine Daily Inquirer, May 31, 2003 (READ MORE)

Basic Info: Director: Leonardo Pascual; Cast: Roderick Paulate, Shyr Valdez, Panchito, Bomber Moran, Tatlong Itlog, Rodolfo ‘Boy’ Garcia, Rez Cortez, Vilma Santos, Ike Lozada, Mario Escudero, Robert Talby, Val Iglesias, Alex Bolado, Fred Moro, Pong Pong, Ding Arraza; Producer: Jose M. Razon; Original Music: Rey Ramos; Cinematography: Apolinario Cuenco, Armando Dulag; Film Editing: Pat Ramos

Plot Summary: No Available Data

Accomplishment: One of early successful gay roles for Paulate.

Film Review: “…As far as he can recall, his first gay outing was in the critically acclaimed High School Circa ’65. “Doon naman, I was nominated for Best Supporting Actor considering na 15 or 16 pa lang ako noon. I was the comic relief of the movie.” Bibeth Orteza, who played a teacher in High School Circa ’65, created a gay character for him in the sitcom “Tepok Bunot.” “Nag-hit ‘yon,” says Roderick. Then a producer gave him the lead role in Charot, a movie inspired by Dustin Hoffman’s gender-bending performance in Tootsie. Before Roderick knew it, other offers to do gay roles started coming his way, with one of them from a very persuasive line producer-actress. “After Charot, ayoko munang tanggapin ang mga gay-gay roles,” he says. “But it was Charo Santos who convinced me to do a gay movie where I would be paired with Maricel (Soriano).” The project was Regal Films’ Inday, Inday sa Balitaw which ended up being a huge success. “The rest is history!” Roderick exclaims. “Yun na! Sunud-sunud na sa box-office…” READ MORE

Maricel Soriano on Roderick Paulate: – “…Tinatrato niya akong tao. We’re parang soulmates. – Manila Standard, Mar 2, 1987 (READ MORE)

Vilma Santos Nakataya ang Buhay para sa Paglilingkod sa Lipa City (Pilipino Reporter, April 24, 1998)

Fashionista!

With a 52nd birthday on the horizon, Ms. Vilma Santos is hotter than ever. The ICON, whose sophisticated-chic- style inspired the many Filipinas around the world. Any way you consider it, Mayor Vi looks simply great. And not just in that cliché’s left-handed-compliment way of “great—for her age.” For most us, the fountain of youth is a kind of holy water. And Ate Vi, the best example of a woman who is fabulous at any age. For Mayor Vi, happiness means kinetics of both body and mind. No amount of living and learning has closed off her youthful curiosity or positive outlook. “I’m so blessed and I can’t ask for more and I’m a very happy person,” she admits. “But that’s because I choose to be happy. You know, we get down, but then we get right back up. And marami tayong pinagdaan ganyan.” Ate Vi, who turns 52 this November, continues. “They say getting old isn’t for the weak of heart, and it’s true. It’s tough. You have to deal with it, You have to live your life as if each day is the greatest day. I put things in perspective. Where is a bad mood or depressed going to get you? It will slow you down, make you miserable and less attractive, way less attractive. I’m so busy with work as Mayor, a mother and an actress. Believe me it’s no joke, I don’t know how I juggle my time but I give credit to all the people behind me. I cannot do it alone and I’m so lucky to have them. Heaven ang feeling ko dahil I know they do their best so they can be proud of me.” Ate Vi added. Sure, she exercise and do Tae-bo — but if she’s too busy, “I won’t obsess, There’s a difference between paying attention and paying too much attention,” she says. “Just think what you eat and what’s going on inside, but don’t obsess.” Unlike many other celebrities. Ate Vi doesn’t considered plastic surgery to be the first age-defying option. Woman can have all the facelifts they want, but the reality is their inside is still what their insides are. “I’m just so scared that something will not be done right when I do cosmetic surgery. People telling me to do this, sabi ko, no- not yet the time. I’m still happy and confident of myself. Believe me, the other reason why I don’t consider it is – mamaya pagtapos ng operation “kirat” na ang isang mata ko…ayyy!” And then she giggles. She confesses her lifestyle has changed a lot since she became mayor in 1998.

Aside from having to travel frequently to Lipa, Batangas, from her home in Green Meadows, Quezon City, every weekend, Vilma says she had to have a complete wardrobe makeover. “I now wear more formal clothes,” she says. “I’m the mayor of this city, I have to look like one. “As an actress, I was used to wearing jeans, shirts and jackets,” says Vilma. She now has several dozens of barong Tagalog and corporate suits, but most of them are at the Recto home in Manila. I wear size 6 for shoes and it must be very comfortable for I’m always on the go. I love Prada and Ferragamo bags, I collect them all. I collect perfume bottles and sunglasses. I love wearing shades. I experiment with different frames and styles . What did not change, she says, is her penchant for handkerchiefs and scarves, a Vilma Santos trademark. “I never leave home without them,” she admits. “Kaya nga ako nabansagang si Panyo. I don’t feel complete without a hankie or a scarf.” Vilma has always carried herself with and individual sense of style that reflects her outlook on life and lets her personality come through. Her look is not dictated by fashion or trends. She’s hip, she’s alive, and she loves glamour and clothes. Her youthfulness, her body language, and infectious sweet smile – she’s ageless.

Ang Makulay na Buhay-Pag-ibig ni Rosa Vilma Santos (Repost)

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

Bukod sa kanyang record bilang the greatest actress of all times and the reigning movie queen of the local cinema ay naitala rin ang kasaysayan ng kanyang pag-ibig. In her early stage of her career, ang dalagang si Vilma Santos ang most desired at most desirable actress, at ang record niyang ‘yon ang nangingibabaw in an industry which feeds on gossip and intrigue. Truly, the star for all seasons and reasons has the longest line of suitors and admirers, barring none. In and out of showbiz, Ate Vi would easily be the most desired star of them all. And to think that she’s not the typical sex symbol of our parochial mold. In matters of the heart, Ate Vi had many romantic interludes with these interesting men in and out of showbiz world. Considers the names that the rumor mill has linked to her: Edgar Mortiz, Eddie Peregrina, Jay Ilagan, Jojit Paredes, Ronnie Henares, Erik Espina, Bongbong Marcos, Dave Brodette, Junior, FPJ, Meng Fei, Dolphy, Jimmy Morato, Rollie Quizon, Bembol Roco, Eugene Torre, Boyet de Leon, Mark Gil, Zaldy Zshornack, Jun Arestorenas, Eddie Rodriguez, Ricky Belmonte, Romeo Vasquez, Mat Ranillo, Joey Stevens, Lito Lapid, Glenn Capacio, Paul Alvarez, Alvin Patrimonio, Dante Silverio, Edu Manzano, Philip Salvador, Miguel Rodriguez, Ronnie Ricketts, Aga Muhlach, Eric Quizon, Gabby Concepcion, Nonoy Zuniga, Jolly Benitez, and Senator Ralph Recto. Her lovelife is one of the movielands’ most colorful and also the stormiest. Like the other actresses who fell in love and fell out of love, Ate Vi has had her share of sad valentines. But while she loved, she loved to the fullest and gave her all. And when she got separated from her first husband, Edu Manzano, she did not linger on the broken pieces of a love affair turned sour.

There was no bitterness or rancour. After all, that bond gave her a son, Luis Manzano. Isa kang “Star for All Seasons”, libu-libo ang mga tagahanga, sinasamba at iniidolo. Napakahirap humanap ng Mr. Right Man na aangkop sa pagiging Vilma Santos niya sa loob at labas ng daigdig ng pelikula. Her being number one star-actress poses a different problem to suitors of lesser means. Of the sundry men that the rumor mill has identified with her, Ate Vi admits to having had real relationships with only five: Edgar Mortiz, her first boyfiend; Ronnie Henares, to whom she was engaged; Romeo Vasquez, her controversial beau; Edu Manzano, to whom she was married and eventually divorced; and Senator Ralph Recto, her longest affair, the only boyfiend she had after her first marriage broke-up and the father of her child, Ryan Christian.

Ate Vi learned different things in the seasons she spent with them. Akala nila ay panghabambuhay na ang kanilang relasyon but it suddenly ended on April 28, 1974. Even now that they lead separate lives, Vilma and Edgar have remained the best of friends.

Taong 1975, a year after she had ended her colorful involvement with Edgar, pumasok naman sa eksena ang elitistang singer na si Ronnie Henares. He taught her how to pronounce English words. Romeo Vasquez is an oddity in Vilma’s life. Hindi akalain ng lahat na ang isang notorious playboy and balikbayan actor would capture the heart of the then elusive Ate Vi.

Nagkaroon sila ng affair which lasted for more than a year. Ate Vi was love struck at talagang na head-over heels in love. True to this title, nagliyab silang dalawa at tunay ngang nag-apoy ang kanilang damdamin. Talagang Ate Vi was ready to give up her life as an actress and would settle with the actor abroad. And with herb relationship with Bobby, nag-surface ang bagong Vilma Santos.Ate Vi realized that she cann’t sacrifice everything for love. Sa Guam naaprubahan ang divorce nila on July 25, 1986 or thereabouts. Despite a 10-year age gap, her marriage with Ralph has weathered all storms and is now into its 20 years. And it is still going strong.

One thing is most important at this time in Vilma’s life-her marriage with Senator Ralph Recto, ostensibly destined to be the most important in her life from now on. – Willie Fernandez, V magazine, 2005

Doppelganger – “…Chiu, who will play a doppelganger in the movie, said it was indeed a wonderful experience to be working alongside Star For All Seasons Vilma Santos. “It’s a wonderful experience. Ang dami kong natutunan sa kanya as an actress and as a person. And kay Direk Chito (Roño) din, sobra akong nag-enjoy,” she said. While there were times when she felt intimidated by Santos, Chiu said the acclaimed actress always encouraged her to just focus on her role. “Sabi niya gawin mo dapat mong gawin sa isang eksena. Huwag mong sasayangin. Paulit-ulit niyang sinasabi na sayang ‘yung eksena,” she said. Chiu said working with Santos helped her grow as an actress. “Parang nag-grow yung acting ko. Madami akong natutunan in terms of work sa set,” she said…” – ABS-CB Nnews, Jun 20 2012 (READ MORE)

“…She is happy daw na as an actress, napagbigyan niya ang sarili na makatapos ng isang pelikula sa taong ito. Her last film was In My Life with son Luis Manzano and John Lloyd Cruz released by Star Cinema nearly three years ago. Her new movie, D’Healing, is also for Star Cinema with Kim Chiu, Janice de Belen and Pokwang. Kasi I want to focus on its release dahil it will coincide with the celebration of my 50th year in showbiz. “I assure the public na this movie is something new, ’di ko pa nagawa bilang aktres. Kaya sana, panoorin nila,” susog niya.” – Nel Alejandrino (READ MORE)

“Gov. Vilma Santos says Star Cinema wants to show her new movie “The Healing” on July 11. “But I told them that’s too soon,” she says at her launch as the endorser of Generics Pharmacy at Shangri-La Makati ballroom. “Aalis pa ako next week, pupunta kami ni Sen. Ralph at ni Ryan Christian sa Hawaii for a one-week vacation. Sabi ko, let’s meet when I come back. Gusto ko naman, mas mai-promote ‘yung movie kasi first time ko gumawa ng suspense thriller with Chito Roño and I’m so proud of it. But Chito says ipaglalaban daw niya. The story is about doppelgangers.” After this, Star Cinema is offering another movie for her for the Metro Filmfest. “But I told them hindi ko na kaya talaga. They even want me to do a TV show in time for my 50th anniversary in showbiz in November but, I don’t know, siguro TV special na lang.” How about the indie film where she’ll play a Ma Barker character? “Adolf Alix gave me the script. Pinag-aaralan ko pa. Nothing is final…” – Mario Bautista (READ MORE)

They survived The Healing in 37 days!” – Jun Nardo, Abante May 29 2012 (READ MORE)

I Survive The Healing in 37 shooting days“. Vi.” – Jimi C. Escala (READ MORE)

SOMETHING NEW – “…The Star for all Seasons is slated to topbill The Healing with Kim Chiu. This drama-horror thriller will be directed by Chito Roño. The two actresses recently had the story conference for their movie, which will be shown during the latter part of the year. Governor Vilma told Showbiz News Ngayon that the movie: “has something to do with mga Pilipinong mahilig magpagamot sa mga healers. But at the end of the day, mga nangyayari sa kapaligiran pagdating sa…spiritual, doon iikot ang istorya. “I find this something new unang una sa story. First time akong gagawa nito plus the fact na I will be doing a movie with Kim Chiu. Definitely that is something very important. At this point in time, what is important is chemistry plus a good project, a good director.” For her part, Kim feels lucky to be given this chance to work with the Star for all Seasons. “Masaya ako and excited ako. Something new din for me to do a horror movie under Star Cinema and to work with Governor Vilma Santos.” The actress-politician then asked Kim to refer to her as Ate Vi and not Governor Vi. I am so proud of you,” sabi ni Santos. Nagpasalamat si Chiu rito. “Wow, thank you so much. Isang malaking karangalan siyempre ang makatrabaho ang isang Governor Vilma Santos. – Mario Dumaual (READ MORE)

FAITH HEALER – “…The film, which is tentatively titledThe Healing, will revolve around the Filipino tradition of going to faith healers to treat their various ailments. The young actress said that she is also excited to work with her other co-stars in the said movie, like Janice De Belen. She added that she admires Janice for her acting in the teleserye Budoy. So, yun, ang galing galing. Kim also shared some details about her character: Ang role ko dito, estudyante na may sakit. Lahat kami dito may sakit kaya lalapit kami sa faith healer. Exciting siya and kaabang-abang talaga ito. Kim added that she got a little scared herself when the plot was explained to her. Acting alongside Vilma Santos is definitely a step-up for the young actress. When asked if she is expecting to win an award for it, Kim said that she will simply do her best and try not to think about it. Pressure? All About Milk

one milk critic “IS Vilma aware that her victims are infants? She is a detriment to the nutrition of infants. Paid to promote Bear Brand, she continues to deceive mothers on the differences between this manufacturer’s milk of 30 years ago, to what Vilma now erroneously calls in her ads “milk.” Globally, when an adulterant is added to milk, it can no longer be called “milk.”…What Vilma calls milk has had its butterfat removed. Butterfat is milk’s most needed by infants. With its butterfat removed, and high-saturate palm oil added, Vilma is promoting milk that is legally no longer milk, not good enough for infants…Bear Brand sold good pure milk 30 years ago. Their technologists learned to remove the good expensive nutrients from pure milk, and replace it with adulterants like palm oil which is not good for infants or adults. Palm oil contains too much saturate which turns to cholesterol…There are products in the supermarkets not advertised to extremes, and do not deceive. I buy an Australian brand called “___” Milk Powder….” (Vilma’s adulterated milk)

when an adulterant is added to milk, it can no longer be called “milk” – Well, our milk critic is correct. When you adulterated a milk, its no longer “milk.” One question though, where was her proof? We did a brief digging and we cannot find anything via internet of any news, articles or research about Bear Brand substituting any adulterant to their powder milk. What we found was the actual ingredients in their product. Here is the link: Nutrient Disclosure infant formula. Here is the nutritional fact link. A newspaper article described Bear Brand Powdered Milk Drink: “rich in calcium, which is important in building strong bones and teeth. It is recommended for children to be consistent in drinking milk as bone growth is at its highest during childhood up to the teenage years.” (Bear Brand helps address malnutrition problems)

butterfat removed and high-saturate palm oil added – Again our critic did NOT mentioned where is she getting this info. Our research though proves some contradiction in our critic’s assertions. First, some additives to powder milk, for example, vegetable oil, zinc, or iodine are not necessarily bad for infants consumption. Second, butterfat milk are not as prestine as what our critics’ arguments, for instance, a pure cow’s milk with butterfat may be hard for an infants to digest. About saturated fat in milk, first, raw milk already contained saturated fats and secondly, not all saturated fats are bad or “cholesterolemic.”.

she is paid to push/deceive mother on children’s milk consumption, lack knowledge on “milk terminology” – Once again, no proof.  We discovered something though, the company who sells this product, Nestle, made an effort to inform the public about one of their product. They clearly indicated in BOLD letters that: “Bear Brand Evaporated Milk_375ml contains only 1/4 the fat of cream. is “NOT SUITABLE AS A COMPLETE MILK FOOD FOR INFANTS.”  Clearly, this is not the kind of company who would deceive their customers.  Which can be also said to their endorser, Vilma Santos Recto.  I mean would a seasoned politician gamble her reputation for a defected product?  She may not look like your typical politician but she is well informed and connected.  Not the type who would gamble their names since she did this endorsement back in 2008 before her reelection bid in 2010.  Lastly, with all these righteous “for the sake of our children” arguments, our milk critic ended her article by endorsing an Australian milk product which in our opinion was quite hypocritical.  Clearly, this is another propaganda news.

helps to address local micronutrient deficiencies – “…Bear Brand launched a powdered milk in 2009 that helps to address local micronutrient deficiencies through iron, zinc, vitamin A and vitamin C fortification. Additionally, it is the only brand in the Philippines with added vitamin C and zinc, both of which are required for normal function of the immune system. The milk is offered in an affordable price (equivalent to CHF 0.20) and is widely available in traditional neighbourhood stores…” (Fortified Milk Powder)

advocacy – “We want to remind mothers to bring back the habit of drinking milk. The health of our children is most important and should be our priority,” Santos-Recto said…“For years we’ve been touching the lives of so many, and we’re happy that our advocacy has become an extra arm for all parents whose dream is to give their children a better future, and for all schoolchildren who deserve a better life,” said Eugene David, business executive manager for dairy health and nutrition solutions for Nestlé Philippines. This year the Laki sa Gatas advocacy team is eyeing several more provinces for its series of nutrition lectures and activities like Bataan, Aurora, Nueva Vizcaya and Zamboanga. It aims to cover more than 700,000 students and more than 400,000 parents…” (Nestlé pushes 2 glasses of milk daily for school kids)

Film Review: Saan Nagtatago Ang Pag-ibig

The Plot: Rick (Ricky Davao), an irresponsible, lecherous law student, always makes his brain-damaged half-brother Val (Tonton Gutierrez) his fall guy for fear of losing the inheritance from his wealthy authoritarian grandmother Doña Pacing (Alicia Vergel). This time he makes Val marry his pregnant girlfriend Stella (Vilma Santos) to save her face and to mollify her parents. Bankrupt with their house facing forfeiture, their mother Carmen (Gloria Romero) is completely fearful and subservient to her intimidating mother in-law Doña Pacing who hates and blames her for the suicide of her son due to Carmen’s past indiscretion. Though trapped in her dire circumstances, Stella stays faithful to her marriage and tries to be a good wife by diligently teaching the childlike Val who finds comfort and love for Stella. – TFC Now (READ MORE)

– RV (READ MORE)

Where does logic hide? – On the outset, this latest output churned by the factory of high gloss komiks melodramas suffers from serious credibility problem. Can a retardate enter into a marriage if the other party consents to it? This sham marriage is void ab initio because of the groom’s incapacity but the film proceeds as if it is legally binding. A causal glance can make the officiator doubt the capacity of the groom but the wedding must take place as has been scripted. The groom later affixes his thumb print on the marriage contract to signify his consent. We are made to believe that it is as simple as that. This is a far worse predicament than waht Vilma Santos suffered in Ibigay Mo sa Akin ang Bukas where she married a homosexual but whose sexual aberration she was not aware of before the wedding. It would take several years before Vilma, who surprisingly played a doctor, finally saw the truth. It was an insult to the viewer’s mind. This time, Vilma (Estella) is presumed into marrying Tonton Gutierrez (Val) because her beau Ricky Davao (Ric) has made her pregnant but cannot give her his name, at least, for the moment. If he marries her at this stage, Ric forfeits the vast inheritance which his rich grandma (Alicia Vergel) has promised to bequeth to him. Tic has made a deal with the old woman that he will finish law and pass the bar before getting hitched. Estella will then seek nullification of her marriage to Val. The red-blooded male, of course, cannot control his libido and succeeds in handling his girlfriend during her fertile grind.

Ric loves Estella directly but not enough to forego his inherittance. It is imperative for Ric to stuck to the deal because his family is in dim straits. His mother’s (Gloria Romero) antique shop isn’t going well and their house has been mortgaged witht the bank. Concerned auntie (Alicia Alonzo) suggests looking for a harmless male to give Estella’s baby a legitimate name while Ric finishes his studies. The task fall on Val Ric’s half-brother, who fell down the stais years ago which caused his retardation. Estella soon learns to accept her new status as wife, maid and teacher to Val which creates a rift between her and Ric. A fight occurs between the brothers which sends Val crushing down the grand veranda….For sure, the film has been well-acted. Vilma, once again awes us with her astringent putdowns in her familiar facial expressions and pertinent body language. That long monologue in front of the dying Tonton is an eloquent testimony to her acting talent. Tonton is worthy of notice as the retardate but we have to be assured that he is capable of doing the things he does in the film. Can he really remember the past with such clarity despite his brain damage? Nevertheless, he has captured the mannerisms and speech of the character he portrays. Alicia Vergel comes on too strong as the aristocratic Nyora Pacing who wears an eyepatch and walks with a cane. Ricky Davao vies for attection in his anti-hero role. Cherie Gil as Ricky’s flighty sister is less fierry but more believable. Gloria Romero delivers a sensitive portrayal of the weak mother with a dark past while Alicia Alonzo plays her sister who is privy to the family’s secrets. Eddie Garcia should be commended for toning down his confrontation scenes. His familiarity with this film genre shows in the way he manipulates the characters and builds up the scene. Still, one cannot help but questions the logic behind that sham marriage. – Luciano E. Soriano (READ MORE)
